Details

Four-miles down a single-track lane that winds along the wooded banks of Loch Voil you’ll find Monachyle Mhor a luxury hotel in Perthshire, Scotland. A vibrant splash of pink against the surrounding mountains, this 18th-century farmhouse and steadings is now a cosy boutique hotel and restaurant with fourteen individually designed rooms. A relaxed, family-run hotel, award-winning chef, Tom Lewis, cooks food fresh from the estate while his artist sister, Melanie Lewis's contemporary paintings hang on the walls next to traditional oils and prints.

The old Monachyle farmhouse and outbuildings have gradually been converted into a cosy yet contemporary country hotel. We have 14 individually styled bedrooms: there are now five in the main house and nine in the courtyard buildings. For a romantic stay, Room 11 has a pair of slipper baths, while in room 12 you can relax in a free-standing Italian stone tub. Two of the courtyard's luxury suites, rooms 14 and 15, have state-of-art spa-size steam rooms. In the original farmhouse front-facing rooms have panoramic loch and mountain views, while most of those in the courtyard have fires, underfloor heating and an outlook over the mountains and farm. The design has been influenced by the natural surroundings, incorporating materials such as slate, wood and local stone. Key design touches include an eclectic mix of antique and contemporary furniture and artwork.

Lunch is served daily between 12 noon and 1:45pm. During the week an a-la-carte menu is offered along with soup or sandwiches on homemade bread.

Monachyle Mhor could provide a blueprint for Hotels anywhere in the Scottish countryside. For it runs rings around most of the competition. The setting is magical-a grassy knoll on the edge of Loch Voil, surrounded by a postcard-perfect arrangement of undulating hills. But the interiors of this traditional pink-harled building (and adjoining stone steading) are splended: an engaging exercise in contemporary rustic chic.
