Torrisdale Castle Self Catering Cottages, Carradale, Campbeltown, Argyll
Torrisdale Castle Estate extends to around 1,500 acres and is located on Kintyre's east coast, with fabulous views across the Kilbrannan Sound to the island of Arran. Warmed by the Gulf Stream and set within magnificent wooded grounds, Torrisdale provides an excellent base to explore a very beautiful and unspoilt part of Scotland's west coast.
The estate is home to the Macalister Hall family who have owned Torrisdale since 1890. Torrisdale Castle, built in 1815 and extended in the early 1900s, is the centrepiece of the estate and is described by many as Kintyre's finest property.
Within the ground floor of the castle is a fantastic newly refurnished apartment, sleeping 6, and set within the peaceful wooded grounds are a further four superb cottages and houses, each enjoying their own private setting.
Of interest at Torrisdale is the organic tannery, specialising in natural coloured sheepskins and deer skins using an ancient tanning method to produce a superior skin.
This beautiful and tranquil estate offers an ideal opportunity to enjoy the comforts of modern day living whilst relaxing within a stunning and stress-free environment.
Holiday Houses, Cottages & Apartment:
The apartment was completed in July 2013 and offers a superb holiday home, with private entrance leading to the castle lawns. The property has excellent views towards the sea and the Isle of Arran, and whilst technically an 'apartment', extends to around 1,800 sqft of space - equivalent to a good sized family home and very private, with the remainder of the Castle occupied by family, with separate entrances. Of special interest is the apartment's very own 'secret room'. It may take you time to find it, however when you do, you won't be disappointed.......!
There are four cottages and houses available to let on the estate, all individual in style and setting, linked by woodland tracks. There are three properties which sleep two people - Garden Cottage with its own wood burning hot tub, South Lodge with exceptional views to Arran, and Arch Cottage located on the main Castle lawns. Lephincorrach Farmhouse is the largest property available, sleeping 10, with a large area of garden and woodland views.
Breaks are available on a weekly basis (either Monday to Monday or Friday to Friday), for the weekend (3 nights from Friday 4pm to Monday 10am), or 4 nights mid-week (Monday to Friday). All are equipped to a good standard including colour TVs, DVDs and Microwaves. Bed linen is provided but towels are extra. High chairs and cots are available, but please bring your own cot bedding. All cottages and houses have their own gardens and stoves, logs being provided without charge.
Things To Do:
Torrisdale Estate is an ideal location to relax and absorb the glorious scenery, nature and wildlife of the Kintyre peninsula. You can explore the castle grounds with its many trails (keeping an eye out for deer and golden eagles); climb the nearby hills, including Beinn an Tuirc, Kintyreís highest peak, to enjoy some spectacular views; and visit the estateís sandy beach, Torrisdale Bay, to enjoy the views of Arran, seabirds and the seals basking on the rocks.
In addition to those found on Torrisdale Estate, there is an abundance of enjoyable hill and forest walks in the local vicinity. The Forestry Commission offers a wide selection of walks varying from "easy" to "strenuous" around Carradale. In 2006, Scotlandís latest long distance walk was launched, the Kintyre Way, which in fact passes through Torrisdale. The walk stretches from Tarbert at the north end of Kintyre, to Southend in the south, extends to approximately 89 miles that criss-cross the peninsula and is divided into 7 sections.
