High Borrans Lodges, Satterthwaite, Nr Windermere, Cumbria
High in the Lakeland Fells on a working hill farm are two beautiful Nordic timber lodges, both luxuriously appointed to provide the perfect self-catering get-away for couples seeking peace and quiet amid stunning Lake District scenery. The lodges are only a very short drive from the main access road into the Lake District (A591). Windermere, with all its restaurants, shops and other amenities, is barely 10 minutes’ drive away, and the M6 motorway can be easily reached within 20 minutes.
High Borrans Farm is a 1000 acre working hill farm, with a flock of some 1200 Swaledale ewes and about 25 beef suckler cows. The land rises to about 1300 feet on heather-clad fell tops, which were formerly used for grouse shooting. The farm is situated right on the bridlepath/footpath network which criss-crosses the Kentmere – Troutbeck fells, so there are miles of off-road walking and riding straight from the door.
Each lodge is fully equipped to provide all the creature comforts needed to enjoy a self-catering break in the Lakes; a haven to return to after a hard day’s walking or biking, or a romantic retreat just to chill out for the day. The lodges can be booked for full weeks, weekends and midweek breaks.
Inside, the living room is tastefully lit, with comfortable seating, stove-effect fire, 32” flat screen television and DVD player. The dining area is equipped with dining table and chairs, and an integrated radio with MP3 connectivity. The bedroom has a high-quality contemporary style kingsize bed and beautiful linen; there is a massive walk-in wardrobe. The luxuriously appointed bathroom includes a big walk-in shower and “his and hers” washbasins. The kitchen is very well appointed with electric oven and gas hob, toaster, microwave, dishwasher and fridge-freezer, in addition to the all the usual equipment.
There is central heating throughout, complemented by the stove-effect fire in the lounge. All gas and electricity within the lodge is included in the rental price, as are bed linen and towels. Washing, drying and ironing facilities are provided in a separate, adjacent building with a key lock facility.
Outside, each lodge has its own private deck and surrounding area of grassland, with private parking for a car. There is a separate barbecue area. We can also provide safe housing on the farm for mountain bikes, and stabling and turnout for horses. We accept dogs, (maximum two per lodge).
Walking, Biking, Riding
High Borrans Farm is well connected to the network of foot- and bridlepaths which criss-cross the fells and valleys in the direction of Kentmere and Troutbeck. The well-known Garburn Pass is one such, and from this track, footpaths lead to the high fells of Ill Bell and Froswick, and connect to High Street, the famous Roman Road which runs from Windermere to Penrith along the fell tops.
Sightseeing/Shopping/Restuarants are all available within the Windermere-Bowness and Ambleside areas, a very convenient drive from High Borrans Lodges. Ask your hosts at the farm, Cathy and Jonathan Hodgson, about any special recommendations. The lodges are a superb base from which to explore the fells, lakes and villages of central Lakeland.
