Hen Aelwyd yr Urdd is a pretty Welsh cottage, dating back over 100 years which provides the perfect cosy retreat for a romantic getaway for couples. Offering compact & comfortable accommodation the cottage really is an ideal base for exploring the area at anytime of the year!

The cottage is well maintained & presented to a high standard throughout, exuding a friendly welcome and cosy ambience. Tucked away from the main road and passing traffic, the cottage is located in the village of Llan Ffestiniog, in the Snowdonia National Park. Known locally as Llan and sometimes shown as Ffestiniog on maps. It is a close neighbour of Blaenau Ffestiniog which is approximately 3 miles away and was once the world’s capital of slate quarrying, known as the ‘City of Slate’ in the 18th Century.

Blaenau Ffestiniog is only 1.5 miles away and offers an array of eating establishments, pubs, shops, chemist, petrol station/garage & leisure centre/swimming pool. Blaenau Ffestiniog is also the home to the World Famous Ffestiniog Narrow Gauge Steam railway which links to the harbour town of Porthmadog

The village stands amongst some dramatic scenery – to the East there is the broad open, moorland wilderness of the Migneint – whilst to the South & West is the glorious Vale of Ffestiniog, a deep sheltered valley of thick woodland and green river meadows. Here you can enjoy some wonderful walks from the front door, one of particular beauty being the picturesque Cynfal Falls, (Rhaeadr Cynfal), located a short walk away.

Llan Ffestiniog has a small but well stocked village shop, post office and the nearest pub is a short walk from the cottage. The Pengwern Arms, an old Coaching Inn dating back some 200 years has opened it’s doors once again for the first time in over 2 years as a community pub, bought by the community for the community. A warm welcome awaits you. The renowned Grapes Inn, a 17th Century Coaching Inn & Restaurant is also only some 2 miles away. The area is also good for fishing & golfing.

Its elevated situation, at the top of the Vale of Ffestiniog, makes Llan a good base for a quiet relaxing break, whilst being centrally located for excursions further afield, such as the World Famous Ffestiniog narrow gauge steam railway & the Llechwedd slate caverns, both only 3 miles away. Many CADW heritage sites are also nearby as is the Italianate village of Portmeirion (8 miles) and many beaches are within a short drive. Coed y Brenin, one of the best mountain bike centres in Britain is only 12 miles away and of course, there is Snowdon itself, which is about a 30 minute drive.
