Welcome to the ‘Hay Loft’ at El Paso!

A genuine former hay loft, it is now a comfortable first floor flat (as its name suggests it had humbler beginnings as a food store for the horses at the former coaching inn next door – now two houses), entered by an exterior stone staircase and provides an ideal base from which to enjoy this lovely area.

We are located at Barton Hill, just off the A64, a small hamlet 1 mile York side of Whitwell on the Hill, which you may find easier to locate on a map (Barton Hill isn’t on many maps).

Situated only 12 miles from central York, you can also easily access the Yorkshire moors and coast either via local by-roads or using main roads, as well as many local formal destinations, including Castle Howard (only 3 miles) , Eden Camp and the glorious ride over the moors on a steam train of the North York Moors Railway, learn about local history and much more.

A 1½ acre wooded paddock opposite El Paso contains our own 7¼” gauge railway (approx ¼ mile long) train rides are available to guests or even perhaps the chance to try your hand at engine driving (or you could bring your own loco if you have one).

Alternatively it can simply be a place to relax (or exercise your dog) after a hard day sightseeing, in an informal setting with trees, pond and seating. Otherwise feel free to relax in our garden.

The Hay Loft has one double bedroom plus it can take another two guests on a fullsize double sofabed in the lounge (both rooms have independent access to the kitchen and bathroom via a central hall. A compact kitchen is well equipped, and the bathroom has a shower over a good sized bath.

Children – any age – are welcome (but no baby facilities, bring your own) and well behaved dogs welcome (other pets please ask)

But please note – children or dogs must not be left unattended in the Hay Loft at any time.
