The town is steeped in history and Melrose Abbey originally built in the early 12th century is now home to the most beautiful monastic ruins in Great Britain, it is also the burial site of the heart of the Scottish King, Robert the Bruce. The Borders Book Festival is an annual event taking place in June and people flock to the village to take part. There are numerous shops, bars and restaurants within the village, Edinburgh and Newcastle are both within 60 miles and offer shopping centres, theatres and much more, the market towns of Jedburgh, Dryburgh and Kelso famous for its horse racing are all within easy reach.
