Fia Cottage, Quendale, Shetland Islands
Fia Cottage offers a very high standard of self catering accommodation. It is in Quendale at the southern end of Shetland and only ten minutes from Sumburgh Airport. The cottage makes an excellent base for exploring the whole of Shetland and is only minutes from the amazing Jarlshof at Sumburgh and the lovely Quendale beach is nearby. Beautifully decorated and furnished the cottage is snug and cosy, with home comforts at hand along with all the modern conveniences you could need on a Shetland holiday.
The cottage was originally built as a shop/post office to serve the local community of Quendale. A telephone installed around the early 1940s, was one of the few phones in the area at the time. On 30th March 1942, during World War II, the phone was used to alert RAF Sumburgh that a bomber had been found crashed on nearby Fitful Head.
Fia Cottage has an open/plan kitchen/living room which with a cosy corner at the back of the staircase cupboard, for sitting in the evening. Like a home from home it is fully equipped with everything you might need on a Shetland holiday.
The kitchen is equipped with plenty of kitchen units, cooker, fridge, microwave oven, freezer, dishwasher and all the cooking or baking items you could wish for. The cosy lounge area has a multi-fuel stove and comfortable leather couches along with Satellite TV, DVD player, free unlimited Wifi, books, games, etc.
The back door is used as the main door – particularly so as the parking area is right next to it. Inside is a fully equipped utility room with all the facilities needed for laundering clothes including a pulley airing system. A garden shed is to the side of the drying green – handy for storing fishing rods, wellie boots, cycles etc. A door leads from the back porch to a remarkably spacious bathroom complete with bath/shower, toilet and large sink.
The bedrooms are upstairs – both have quality beds, mattresses and Saunderson’s ‘retro’ bed linen. Full bed linen and towel change is offered at no extra charge for stays of two weeks or more.
The Shetland Islands are located off the north coast of Scotland, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the North Sea. The 60° north latitude line passes through the south mainland of Shetland, close to Fia Cottage! If you enjoy bird watching or wildlife photography Shetland is definitely the place for you! Popular wildlife here include Otters, Killer Whales, Puffins, Sea Birds and of course Shetland Ponies.
