Dog Friendly Days Out

South Tynedale Railway

Alston, Cumbria, North Pennines AONB

South Tyndale Railway is a multi-award-winning, narrow-gauge railway. Our trains run across the beautiful North Pennines, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, starting at Alston in the South Tyne Valley. Its a great day out for families whatever the weather, were very dog friendly and all our trains are accessible too.

Since 1983, the South Tynedale Railway Preservation Society has run and developed the railway, which was originally opened in 1851. The society restores and preserves the former Haltwhistle Alston branch railway, providing facilities for the public to travel on, enjoy the locomotive journey and the stunning scenery which it travels through.

The Railway is very dog friendly and has received double gold at the North East Tourism Awards. We understand that dogs are part of the family and we look forward to meeting our canine visitors just as much as our human ones! Dogs are welcome everywhere at South Tynedale Railway.

During your visit we recommend you explore the South Tyne Trail. This runs next to the track and provides plenty of space for dogs to run, and with a station hopper ticket you can walk the trail and ride the train! There are large, free car parks at both Alston and Slaggyford stations and the trail is accessed easily from both.

South Tynedale Railway is a great base from which to explore the area. The centre of Alston with its historic market cross and cobbled streets is only a five minute walk away and well give you a free map to help you find your way around.
